San Francisco 49ers' top 9 NFL Draft steals of all time
By Scott Conrad
No. 2: QB Joe Montana, Round 3, 82nd pick overall (1979)
San Francisco has found a number of gems in the third round of the draft, and one of the earlier ones was the great "Joe Cool" or the "Comeback Kid."
Joe Montana would go on to win the league's Most Valuable Player award in back-to-back years in 1989 and 1990.
He was a part of eight Pro Bowl squads in addition to recording the highest passer rating in the NFC in the five seasons between 1981 and 1989. Fellow 1979-draftee, Dwight Clark. was Montana's receiver for "The Catch."
Not only did the University of Notre Dame talent win four Super Bowls, he would also earn MVP honors in three of them. After playing his final two seasons in Kansas City with the Chiefs, Montana became a part of the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time team in 1994.
For many, he's still the greatest quarterback of all time.
Montana's career stat line is certainly beyond impressive with a passing completion percentage of 63.2, 40,551 yards and 273 touchdowns.
It's no wonder why this Hall of Famer also had his jersey (No. 16) retired by the 49ers.
