Predicting 49ers' 53-man roster after 1st week of preseason games

The 49ers' brass will face plenty of decisions leading up to final roster cuts. The first preseason game might have provided some insight into how those moves might shake out.

49ers' Secondary

CB Charvarius Ward

CB Deommodore Lenoir

CB Rendardo Green

CB Isaac Yiadom

CB Darrell Luter, Jr

CB Samuel Womack

S Talanoa Hufanga

S Ji'Ayir Brown

S George Odum

S Malik Mustapha

While this is the same group from the first time around, there were some lessons learned from the Titans' game, both from those who played and those who didn't.

Lesson 1: The 49ers see Isaac Yiadom as a key member of this secondary, since he, like other presumed starters in Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir, didn't suit up for the game.

Lesson 2: The 49ers trust Renardo Green already, as they moved him inside for nickel packages on Saturday. This suggests they want him to be a key part of this defense as well.

Lesson 3: Malik Mustapha is a bad dude.

Beyond that, George Odum has been great in training camp and figures to be the next man up at the safety position if Talanoa Hufanga isn't ready for Week 1. The rest of the group looks fairly well locked in, although veteran Rock Ya-Sin made a case for himself on Saturday and could be an option if Womack isn't impressing.

Finally, Ambry Thomas breaking his forearm during the game is a bummer for him, mostly because it was going to be a major uphill climb for him to make the roster anyway. Now his time in San Francisco is almost certainly over.
