5 mid-tier free agents 49ers must pursue (and can afford)

The Niners can't overspend on the free-agent market this offseason, but there are still some likable options who won't be too expensive.

No. 2: Right guard Robert Hunt (Dolphins)

So far on this list, each one of the targeted free agents has some ties to the current 49ers regime in one way or another.

That includes Miami Dolphins guard Robert Hunt, who played underneath head coach Mike McDaniel, a well-known Kyle Shanahan protege.

Hunt, too, found himself linked as a potential free-agent fit for the Niners by ESPN's Matt Bowen, who pointed out how San Francisco could upgrade the right side of its offensive line by adding the soon-to-be 27 year old.

Currently, the 49ers have Spencer Burford and Jon Feliciano in that spot. But Burford hasn't quite molded into a reliable starter, and Feliciano is a free agent this offseason.

Hunt, who has been a Miami mainstay the last four years, would be an upgrade over both players, and guards typically don't command big money and could cost the Niners no more than $6 million per season.

That'd be smart money spent.
