Did Lions just troll 49ers in NFL Draft? If so, they failed miserably
By Peter Panacy
It appears as if the Lions were trolling the 49ers during the NFL Draft by wearing a specific jersey, although it's unclear if that was the intent.
The Detroit Lions either love their head coach, Dan Campbell. Or they were attempting a troll job of the San Francisco 49ers in a very bad way.
The former is the likeliest case, as members of Detroit's 2024 NFL Draft war room were all donning jerseys with the No. 89 on them.
That's Campbell's old number from his playing days.
If that's the conclusion, the story ends there. Campbell, indeed, is popular with his players and the front office. And it wouldn't be a shocker if everyone in the room.
But that would be a boring conclusion. We're not here for boredom. We're here for fun.
As it goes, No. 89 is also tight end Brock Wright's jersey.
Not long ago, the Niners attempted to sign the restricted free agent to a three-year contract to support their All-Pro, George Kittle. But the Lions ultimately matched the RFA's offer from San Francisco, ensuring Wright would stay in Detroit on a new three-year deal.
While the logical conclusion is that the Lions' front office was wearing that number as an homage to Campbell, at least someone in the room had to say it was Wright's number, too. With the 49ers watching, it's hard not to draw that modest conclusion.
Had it been a troll job, which would have been fun, the only thing the Niners would have needed to do is remind Detroit what happened in the NFC Championship game last January.
That epic come-from-behind victory for San Francisco when the Lions were up big at halftime is all the return smack talk the 49ers would have needed.
