49ers roster 2023: Everyone says Brock Purdy is the 'real deal,' but is he?

No longer Mr. Irrelevant, Brock Purdy's next challenge will be to prove his rookie-year ascent was no fluke.

Expectations for Brock Purdy, 49ers in 2023

Brock Purdy isn't going to take the league by storm after doing so last season. And, despite his success, Purdy does have his share of flaws. A full season of him starting will expose those more.

That said, Purdy couldn't be in a better context than the one he's enjoying now.

For starters, Kyle Shanahan's offense is essentially tailored for Purdy to simply go with his primary or secondary read, nothing more, knowing that one of those two players should be open. On top of that, the Niners are loaded with talented playmakers like wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk or All-Pros like George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey.

Even handing the ball off to McCaffrey or Samuel could help Purdy look like a star in the making.

And San Francisco's top-ranked defense will help Purdy, too, by forcing opponents' own defenses to be on the field longer.

All Purdy might have to do is manage, not make mistakes and engineer Shanahan's offense.

Anything more will be exemplary, but the expectation level should be set back ever so slightly.

That way, any success from Purdy will still be a pleasant surprise.
