Quarterback Sam Darnold didn't exactly showcase much ability in the 49ers offense when he took over at times in 2023. He's no guarantee to return, and the team might like to develop another young quarterback behind Brock Purdy whom they could in turn flip for a better pick down the line.
Michael Hiers was spectacular for Samford in 2023, completing 71 percent of his passes for 3,056 yards, 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He was even better in 2022, completing 77 percent of his passes for 3,534 yards, 36 touchdowns and four interceptions.
There's questions surrounding his opposition level, but Hiers has shown some NFL-caliber talent as a developmental Day 3 project.
