49ers roster: Top position battles to watch after NFL Draft
By Peter Panacy
49ers position battle to watch: Quarterback
Players in the fray: Trey Lance, Sam Darnold
San Francisco didn’t draft a quarterback. It didn’t even sign one as an undrafted free agent right after the draft concluded.
On top of that, the 49ers elected not to trade quarterback Trey Lance despite plenty of speculation that a deal could go down. While this could merely be a result of Lance not having much of a market at all, the hard reality is that he’ll be on the roster for offseason programs and probably training camp, too, at least until the point where a market develops.
As long as the presumed starter, Brock Purdy, is out recovering from offseason elbow surgery, Lance will have a shot to compete for not only a roster spot but the starting gig, too.

His lone competition, for now, is another veteran castoff, Sam Darnold, whom the Niners picked up as a free agent after he flamed out with both the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers.
Regardless of Lance’s future, fans will pay attention to this competition and position battle simply because of the magnitude of ramifications that will play out.
