49ers bold NFL Draft prediction No. 5: Niners deal Trey Lance

OK, this does sound pretty far-fetched. Especially with Brock Purdy on the mend and San Francisco only recently taking a low-risk flier on Sam Darnold via free agency.

However, there is merit to the idea of trading Trey Lance.

The 49ers gave Darnold $3.5 million in guaranteed money. That’s not the kind of cash for a training camp body, and it highly suggests he’ll be more than just an inactive QB3 on game day. On top of that, Lance has just four regular-season NFL starts and hasn’t played a full year as a starter since 2019.

That’s a lifetime in terms of football effectiveness.

Lance still has both youth and potential on his side. And, if the Niners are fully committed to Purdy as their future starter despite all that was once invested in Lance, trading the latter would at least allow John Lynch and Co. to recoup some of those assets.

Even if it was a net loss.

It would be bold, but the rationale for trading Lance is already there.
