On the clock: NFL Draft Pick No. 16: Washington Commanders – Joey Porter Jr, Cornerback, Penn State

Mock Draft 1.0: Christian Gonzalez, Cornerback, Oregon

The Washington Commanders claimed cornerback Cameron Dantzler from waivers to help with their cornerback problems but they can’t rely on him to fill that hole. They’ll still look to add at the position as their pass defense was atrocious.

Joey Porter Jr is an exciting athletic prospect who prospered at the NFL Combine to be a strong chance to challenge Christian Gonzalez as the first cornerback off the board.

That doesn’t pan out in this draft, but he makes a lot of a sense for Washington who met with Porter at Mobile.

While Porter isn’t someone you can put in the slot, he’s a special prospect to potentially be a shutdown cornerback in the NFL. He’s ridiculously talented athletically and put that on display at the combine and the Pro Day at Penn State.

Porter didn’t record an interception in 2022 but he did have 11 passes defended for the Nittany Lions. While teams would like to see him make more plays on the football, there’s no doubt he has the ability to cover the speediest receivers.
