49ers free-agent target No. 4: Cornerback Marcus Peters

Not so long ago, seeing veteran cornerback Marcus Peters make it beyond the first few hours of NFL free agency would have been inconceivable.

However, the 30-year-old Peters isn’t quite the same player he was not so long ago, and he’s also coming off a modest bounce-back campaign in 2022 that followed missing all of 2021 with a serious leg injury.

That said, Peters is turning into one of those lower-risk, high-reward kind of players who’ll no longer command top dollar on the open market but can still contribute at a high level if healthy.

Peter might have nabbed only one interception for the Baltimore Ravens last year, but he still forced two fumbles and broke up six passes over 13 games played, all of them starts.

The Niners already have their No. 1 cornerback in Charvarius Ward, but Emmanuel Moseley departed via free agency on the other end.

Unless San Francisco is adamant that third-year pro Deommodore Lenoir can play effectively on the boundary, taking a cheaper flier on Peters wouldn’t be a bad move.
