No. 4 free agent 49ers must avoid: OT Taylor Lewan

Sticking with the theme of offensive linemen, there are those who think former Tennessee Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan would be a perfect upgrade over the Niners’ likely departing right tackle, Mike McGlinchey, who’ll be a difficult re-sign priority for John Lynch.

McGlinchey has his faults, yes. But Lewan isn’t exactly an upgrade in either particular category of run blocking or pass protection.

Plus, Lewan’s injury history over the last few years is awfully troubling. He’s played in only 20 regular-season games over the last three seasons.

For a San Francisco team that has dealt with all kinds of injury problems, adding Lewan would only compound those issues.

Plus, as Lewan said himself, he’s a left tackle. Not a right tackle, and it’s doubtful he’d want to switch to the right side of the line at this stage of his career anyway.
