49ers pass-rushing target No. 1: Marcus Davenport, Saints

Yes, we’re ranking the free-agent edge rushers here. Not listing out who is most likely to join San Francisco this offseason.

If 31 other teams suddenly decided to forego whatever needs for an outside pass rush, the 49ers would have a clear path to lure in the best pure pass-rusher in this offseason’s NFL free agency class, New Orleans Saints EDGE Marcus Davenport.

OK, Davenport was awfully disappointing in 2022 with only half a sack in the wake of his nine-sack campaign in 2021.

But, for the 26 year old, talent is still through the roof, and one can only fathom just how effective he’d be under the tutelage of Niners defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, who has maximized the output from castoff edge rushers like Kerry Hyder and Arden Key in previous years.

Others may have better pedigrees, but Davenport still has the biggest upside.

Maybe San Francisco gets lucky when NFL free agency begins on March 15.
