Former 49ers free-agent No. 3: Right tackle Tom Compton

It’s going to be awfully difficult for the Niners to re-sign their starting right tackle, Mike McGlinchey, who has openly said he wants to return to San Francisco but understands that money will be a key factor in whether or not that happens.

Considering the 49ers’ relative lack of cap space, it’ll be tough for McGlinchey to return, and there are those thinking the Niners would be better off without him anyway.

Yet finding a replacement could prove difficult. However, recalling how McGlinchey missed the second half of the 2021 season with a torn quad, it just so happens that his long-term fill-in is heading to NFL free agency this offseason, Tom Compton, who’ll likely not stick around after one year with the Denver Broncos.

Compton was actually more serviceable in relief of McGlinchey than would be expected, so he could easily turn into a contingency plan for San Francisco.
