49ers improbable free-agent re-sign No. 1: Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

Not again, right?

A year after already having this discussion about quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco is in an even greater position to finally bid farewell to the veteran signal-caller. Unlike 2022, Jimmy G is a free agent this offseason.

With Trey Lance and Brock Purdy both vying for the starting role in 2023, why on earth would Garoppolo’s camp want to return to the Bay Area unless he was all but guaranteed a starting job?

Kyle Shanahan has already stated that he doesn’t “see any scenario” where Garoppolo and the 49ers reunite, but similar sentiments were uttered last offseason, too.

Plus, Garoppolo’s free-agent market might not be as robust as one thinks it could be. And, with both Purdy and Lance on the mend from injuries suffered last season, the Niners may be pressed into re-signing the veteran.

San Francisco can’t quit Garoppolo. It just can’t for whatever reason.
