49ers improbable free-agent re-sign No. 3: Cornerback Jason Verrett

There’s no way the Niners re-sign cornerback Jason Verrett again, right? Not after he tore his ACL in Week 1 of the 2021 season, missed that full year, and then suffered a torn Achilles during training camp prior to the 2022 season.

That’ll mean Verrett hasn’t completed anything close to a full season since his 2020 campaign, and the 31-year-old oft-injured veteran already couldn’t return to form during San Francisco’s push last season.

So, why would the 49ers try again?

For starters, a veteran’s minimum deal with zero in guaranteed money might warrant a return, if for no other reason than to bolster the depth chart behind the Niners’ No. 1 cornerback, Charvarius Ward.

Just like last year when Verrett re-signed, anything San Francisco gets from him in 2023 would be a bonus.
