49ers top contract No. 1: Left tackle Trent Williams

2023 Cap Hit: $27.227 million ($6.3 million guaranteed)

Arguing about Arik Armstead’s contract and value is one thing. It’s folly to do so with All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams’ deal, one signed heading into 2021 that made him the best-paid offensive lineman in NFL history.

For someone whom many regard as the best pound-for-pound player in the NFL right now, it’s probably worthwhile.

Williams is receiving a massive pay raise over the $9.67 million he earned in 2022, that figure jumping up to a potential cap hit of more than $27 million in 2023, $6.3 million of which is fully guaranteed.

The possible cap hit will continue to increase, but the guaranteed cash falls to nothing heading into 2024.

Perhaps that’s why Williams ultimately elected not to retire this offseason, as leaving no less than $6.3 million on the table sounds pretty folly.
