NFL free agency: Steve Wilks can bring cornerback T.J. Carrie to 49ers

The Niners made a splash last offseason by onboarding former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward, and that move worked out well.

This offseason, however, San Francisco might not just lose Jimmie Ward, whose versatility came in handy, but it also might lose No. 2 cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, who suffered a torn ACL in the win over the Panthers that ultimately led to Steve Wilks getting the interim job.

As such, there are two cornerback spots that could potentially need filling, yet Wilks might be savvy enough to convince one of his repeat players, veteran corner T.J. Carrie, to head out to the West Coast and join the 49ers in NFL free agency.

Carrie, who’ll turn 33 years old this offseason, spent two separate stints with Wilks, the first back with the Cleveland Browns in 2019 and then again last year.

And while Carrie’s age might be a deterrent, having the veteran as a one- or two-year stopgap option with some experience to boot might be wise.

Especially if Wilks enjoyed what he saw out of the versatile defensive back last season.
