NFC Championship advantage No. 2: Eagles are better than 49ers in the red zone

Brock Purdy has helped hand defeats to quarterbacks who have better pedigrees than him already, so we have to explore more areas in which Philadelphia has advantages than just under center.

One such area is in the red zone, and it takes place on both sides of the ball.

For a second-seeded team with a solid offense and an elite defense, the Niners have been surprisingly inefficient in the red zone. Check out their rankings on offense and defense:

  • 49ers red-zone offense: 20th
  • 49ers red-zone defense: 18th

On the flip side, the Eagles enter this game with one of the best red-zone offenses in the league, and their red-zone defense has held its own, too:

  • Eagles red-zone offense: 3rd
  • Eagles red-zone defense: 11th

Putting things into perspective, San Francisco will need to engineer plenty of drives that culminate in seven points instead of three, while it’ll be prudent for coordinator DeMeco Ryans’ defense to force as many 3-and-outs against Philly as possible.

Not an easy task.
