49ers New Year’s resolution No. 4: Say goodbye to Jimmy Garoppolo (finally)

Alright, in hindsight, it’s a good thing San Francisco ultimately didn’t trade away quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo last offseason.

Knowing what we know now, the 49ers needed Jimmy G to return and relieve the injured starter, Trey Lance, way back in Week 2. And before getting himself seriously hurt in Week 13, Garoppolo was arguably playing the best football of his pro career. With little doubt, the Niners are in their current playoff position because of Garoppolo’s efforts.

Yet there’s still chatter about San Francisco bringing Garoppolo back (again) in 2023.

It does make some sense. Lance, now having missed two years of playing extensively, is still an unknown, and no one is going to crown rookie quarterback Brock Purdy as the franchise’s savior after he started a mere three games.

That said, Garoppolo needs to be shown the door, albeit in a friendly manner.

He’s a free agent anyway, and the only way he’d re-sign with the 49ers is if he’d be guaranteed the starter’s job.

Whether it’s Purdy or Lance in 2023, the Niners need to go that route and not reopen the door with Jimmy G once more.

Let it be closed.

And with that, on behalf of everyone here at Niner Noise, have a wonderful and happy New Year!
