49ers Quarterback No. 1: Trey Lance

Here’s where it gets a little dicey.

Prior to the start of the season, Trey Lance was the future of the franchise. Fast forward to Week 16, and Lance has mostly sat yet another year on the sidelines, while Brock Purdy looks like “The Great White Hope.”

Fans would be up in arms if Lance was on his way out and Purdy was given the reins for the unforeseen future.

But that’s exactly what could happen.

If Purdy continues his dominance, the 49ers will have a superb starter on a rookie deal for three more years. The front office could then sign Jimmy Garoppolo to a bargain deal as a fully capable backup.

And who knows? There are plenty of quarterback-needy teams out there that might give up some draft capital for Lance. If that’s the case, the Niners could add some solid depth and maybe a few starters who could step up in years to come.

It would be unfortunate to see Lance leave before he truly had a chance to get started, but football is a business and every owner in the league would beg for a predicament of this kind. Having two quarterbacks who could lead this team for years to come is a special situation.

ance is going to have a phenomenal career, but it just may not be with San Francisco. Of course, that is complete speculation on my part.

One thing is for sure, if Brock Purdy steers the franchise into a deep playoff run, don’t look for him to exit anytime soon.
