49ers dud: Safety Talanoa Hufanga

The Niners defense is so elite that it almost feels sacrilege to call out one of its key starters as a dud any given week.

And, for the most part, second-year safety Talanoa Hufanga played a solid game. As far as his work down around the line of scrimmage and as a blitzing defensive back, Hufanga is excellent. He almost had an interception, too, and he would have recorded it if he was merely an inch or two taller.

However, there’s been something of a weekly development with him blowing at least one coverage per game, and that came on the Seahawks’ lone touchdown score of the night when tight end Noah Fant was able to roam free for a 10-yard score:

However, if you are being too critical, just know Hufanga made up for it by registering a forced fumble and also sacking Hawks quarterback Geno Smith on a blitz.

If that still classifies the safety as a dud, it probably means San Francisco’s defense is pretty good, right?
