49ers stud: Linebacker Dre Greenlaw

Admittedly, there were questions we asked about the 49ers needing to extend linebacker Dre Greenlaw, particularly in the wake of him missing almost all of the 2021 season and in parallel with fellow backer Azeez Al-Shaair’s ascent.

However, with each passing week, it’s looking as if the Niners have a bargain with Greenlaw making splash play after splash play.

Sure, All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner has name recognition, at least nationally. But Greenlaw, who had eight tackles and two passes broken up, forced the key fumble that cornerback Charvarius Ward recovered and nearly returned for a defensive touchdown.

With San Francisco scoring shortly thereafter, it’s safe to say “Big Play Dre’s” play right there was a turning-point moment.

Greenlaw has been making impact plays in each of the last three weeks, including an interception of Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and then the forced fumble versus Seattle.

And that’s just another reason why the 49ers own the NFL’s No. 1 defense.
