49ers stud: DB Jimmie Ward

Casual San Francisco fans probably don’t know or understand just how good a player defensive back Jimmie Ward is.

As for the rest of us, we know.

Ward made that apparent on Sunday, still serving in that nickel cornerback role, thanks to the surprisingly solid play from fellow safety Tashaun Gipson (who recorded the other of two interceptions tossed by Tom Brady in the game).

And, regardless of how one wants to dice it up, Ward’s impact was felt all over. Like Greenlaw, Ward seemed to be around the ball at all times.

Starting off with his eight tackles, Ward also added a quarterback hit, one pass broken up and a forced fumble, and the tenacity with which he plays helped set the tone for the 49ers defense being so dominant against the Buccaneers for all four quarters.

With so many defensive studs in a game where the Bucs scored just seven points, Ward standing out just a bit more has to be pretty special.
