49ers grades: Defense

Defensive Line

When it came to running defense, the 49ers as usual held up its position as the best in the league, as Alvin Kamara and company could not find a way through the trenches.

When it came to rushing the passer it was a bit more difficult, as the Saints only conceded one sack of their own and the Niners defense couldn’t close the deal despite copious pressure on occasion.

That being said, there was pressure and when all is said and done, the 49ers pitched a shutout in large thanks due to the battle being won here. EDGE Nick Bosa added a sack to his tally to an already impressive resume this season also, although he may have cheated into the neutral zone a fraction.

That’s alright, though, we won’t ask him to give it back.

Grade: B+

Linebackers

Fred Warner once again stepped up as the best non-pass rushing linebacker in the NFL, as he was an absolute missile in the middle of the field for San Francisco, forcing a fumble early and taking over the game, also nearly having a sack off a perfect blitz.

He was flanked by his reliable deputies in Dre Greenlaw and Azeez Al-Shaair, each putting their own mark on the game in different ways.

Is there any doubt this is the best linebacking corps in football?

Grade: A+

Defensive Backs

This wasn’t a perfect performance, as they were beaten in coverage a few times, but the 49ers’ defensive backs did their part to pitch a shutout today.

The vital play was late as the Niners were trying to keep the Saints out, the 13-0 lead threatening to become just a one-touchdown lead if they got over the line. With Kamara wrestling to get the ball over the goal line, Talanoa Hufanga came in with a perfect hit to pop the ball out before falling on the ball.

That ended the game right there and then.

The coverage wasn’t perfect as mentioned, but it was certainly good enough.
