49ers Stud: Samuel Womack

It seems strange to isolate a single member of the Niners defense, especially one that didn’t truly factor as part of the defense for most of the game.

But it’s worth noting that rookie cornerback Samuel Womack has been a key cog in San Francisco’s special teams unit this season, and that continued on Monday night in Mexico City.

Womack downed yet another Mitch Wishnowsky punt inside the 5-yard line and then turned in an excellent performance on defense, both as a substitute for a briefly injured Jimmie Ward and in garbage time.

The rookie almost capped the Niners’ second-half performance with a massive bang, as he just missed a surefire pick-six against Cardinals backup quarterback Trace McSorley, but it bounced off his hands. Yet Womack made up for it by intercepting McSorley on the goal line to close out the game, the first pick of his career.

Add to that his two passes defended against the Cardinals, and it is safe to say that Womack had the most impactful game of his young NFL career.
