49ers roster: 4 players who won’t make it through rest of 2022
By Peter Panacy
No. 1: 49ers cornerback Dontae Johnson
Ah, yes. The inevitable.
Cornerback Dontae Johnson actually isn’t on the 49ers’ 53-man roster right now. He’s on the practice squad. However, any fan who has watched the Niners in any capacity over the last few years knows, Johnson will be back on the active roster this season.
Again, inevitability is key here.
Perhaps Johnson will need to be called up in the wake of another Jason Verrett injury, or it could be the need to provide some veteran presence in the secondary in case two of San Francisco’s other younger defensive backs, Deommodore Lenoir or Ambry Thomas, struggle down the stretch.

Either way, Johnson will be back. And, just as has been the case on a seemingly yearly basis, Johnson will be off the 53-man roster again, too, between Weeks 10 and 18.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing. The 49ers seem to have Johnson’s (phone) number on speed dial, and he’s a regular addition to some part of the Niners’ crop of players, always going back and forth between the practice squad and the active roster.
That’ll take place again between now and the end of the regular season.
