49ers NFL trade deadline dream target No. 1: C Mason Cole, Steelers

Yes, let’s put a center at the top of San Francisco’s dream targets for the NFL trade deadline.

Not a flashy wide receiver, an elite pass-rusher or a shutdown cornerback. A center.

If there’s a major glaring weakness on the 49ers roster right now, current center Jake Brendel could be it. A journeyman backup who entered 2022 with only three starts under his belt until this season, Brendel wasn’t supposed to be the No. 1 option but was forced into being so after Pro Bowler Alex Mack retired the last offseason.

Needless to say, finding an upgrade is something the Niners should probably think about in a hurry.

With the Pittsburgh Steelers trending towards the first sub-.500 season under head coach Mike Tomlin, the thought of them being sellers is on the table. And while their own offensive line isn’t exactly top-notch, center Mason Cole has been a quality option this season and is coming off another solid year with the Minnesota Vikings back in 2021.

Cole might be a nice medium-term option, as he’s currently under contract through 2024. But a San Francisco trade for the 26 year old would shore up arguably the weakest component of its offense: the interior of the O-line.

And that might go a long way toward rectifying the 49ers’ other offensive woes, too.

The 2022 NFL trade deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. ET.
