49ers dud: Running back Jeff Wilson

A week ago, back when the Niners were busy pummeling the Carolina Panthers, running back Jeff Wilson Jr. easily churned out an impressive 120-yard day where he was frequently gashing Carolina’s defense with little resistance.

That wasn’t the case against the Falcons, though.

Granted, Atlanta did an excellent job overpowering San Francisco’s run-blocking efforts, and Wilson could only do so much when there were defenders in his face right at the line of scrimmage.

Regardless, that doesn’t erase the fact that Wilson struggled to make the most out of whatever carrying opportunities he had, finishing the day with only 25 yards on seven carries and averaging just 3.6 yards per attempt.

Oh, and his lost fumble? Atlanta scooped it up and returned it for a touchdown, its second score of the game.

The burst, strength and explosiveness that were on display from Wilson during Week 5 were wholly absent last Sunday, and that forced the 49ers to rely much heavier on Jimmy Garoppolo and the passing game.

Especially when Atlanta started to run away with the game in the second half.
