49ers stud: Cornerback Charvarius Ward

Week 5 was a perfect justification for why the Niners paid big free-agent money to cornerback Charvarius Ward last offseason.

Baker Mayfield figured to use his best offensive weapons, running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Robbie Anderson early and often throughout the game, yet Ward and the remainder of San Francisco’s defensive backs were excellent.

Ward in particular, too:

Frequently operating in one-on-one man coverage, Ward recorded four tackles and four pass breakups, helping ensure Mayfield and the rest of the Panthers offense would have all kinds of trouble moving the ball through the air.

The ability of the 49ers to place Ward on an island and allow their other coverage players to defend elsewhere has unlocked the true potency of the defense.

And, yes, Ward has been worth every penny.
