No. 2: 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga

The defense has been the focal point of the 49ers for the past two weeks. Simply put, they have been excellent on that side of the ball in two games so far in 2022.

Arguably the best player on the Niners’ defense through the first two weeks has been safety Talanoa Hufanga.

Since the departure of safety Jaquiski Tartt via free agency, the second-year man out of USC has been excellent in his two starts to kick off the 2022 season, which has been quite the positive for the former fifth-round NFL Draft pick.

In  Week 1, Hufanga recorded 11 combined tackles, two tackles for a loss and one interception. He followed up that performance in Week 2 with six combined tackles, one tackle for a loss and two passes defended.

After two weeks of play, Hufanga was ranked second by Pro Football Focus out of all safeties with a 90.7 grade.

Look for Hufanga to be all over the field on Sunday stopping the run, playing in pass coverage and don’t be surprised if you see him rushing the passer as well.
