49ers versus Chicago: 10 Bears that can help fuel an upset
As is the case with the 49ers, the Bears will field one of the NFL’s stubborn defenses.
It isn’t quite the Monsters of the Midway, but the Bears have long been known for defense. The questions are about whether or not their offense will help them out by allowing them to rest so they’re as fresh as possible at the end of games.
If Trey Lance and the offense can sustain drives, that will go a long way in helping the 49ers leave the Windy City with a Week 1 win.
Roquan Smith, linebacker
Contract issues aside, Roquan Smith is still one of the most talented defensive players in the NFL regardless of position. If he’s on the field, he can affect any play, so San Francisco will need to know where he is at all times.
Robert Quinn, defensive end
Niners left tackle Trent Williams gets mentioned often, and for obvious reasons. He was a First-Team All-Pro last season after notching another Pro Bowl nod, his ninth. In Week 1, he’ll have his hands full with Robert Quinn.
Last year, he racked up 18.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. If there are any mental lapses on offense, he can shift the momentum of any game in a hurry.
Al-Quadin Muhammad, defensive end
Al-Quadin Muhammad takes up residency on the other side of Chicago’s defensive line. This is his first season with the Niners after racking up six sacks and a forced fumble in 2021, but he could be on the verge of a monster season this year.
Jaylon Johnson, cornerback
Jaylon Johnson is Chicago’s best cornerback, but much is expected of Kyler Gordon as well. The latter was a second-round draft choice in 2021 after earning a First-Team All-Pac-12 nod in 2021.
Jaquan Brisker, safety
The Bears are hoping they hit the jackpot with the selection of Jaquan Brisker after utilizing a second-round selection on him during this past April’s draft. The San Francisco 49ers will get an extended look at him in Week 1.
