49ers players who have one last shot vs. Texans to make 53-man roster

No. 3: 49ers cornerback Ambry Thomas
This certainly isn’t the first time we’ve called out second-year cornerback Ambry Thomas as being a cut risk only two years in the NFL and after impressing late during his rookie season with the 49ers down the stretch in 2021.
Thomas struggled in training camp, didn’t look particularly great during the Niners’ preseason victory over the Packers and subsequently missed the Vikings game with a minor injury.
All the while, San Francisco has watched fellow depth corners like Deommodore Lenoir and Qwuantrezz Knight look a bit more impressive.
Lenoir, in particular, could be the best challenger for what’ll likely be five or six spots on the 53-man roster. With Charvarius Ward, Emmanuel Moseley and rookie Samuel Womack all but guaranteed spots, there’ll be only two or three depth-chart slots available.
Thomas was bumped down from the second-team unit to the third-stringers late in training camp, suggesting the 49ers don’t have a lot of confidence in him right now.
And by missing Week 2 of the preseason, he’ll need to have an exceptionally great game against Houston to ensure he’ll stick around.
