49ers first-cut candidate No. 2: Tight end Troy Fumagalli

Unlike Tay Martin, the Niners actually deployed depth tight end Troy Fumagalli a significant amount against the Packers, him receiving a total of 28 snaps during the game, by far the most out of anyone at his position.

Even with All-Pro George Kittle not likely to play at all during the preseason, San Francisco nevertheless has an awfully deep crop of tight ends, including Fumagalli, who might be the last member in line here despite his notable snap count.

Simply put, the numbers just don’t add up for Fumagalli to continue forward with the 49ers beyond one week of preseason action.

Despite the Niners listing third-year tight end Charlie Woerner on the physically unable-to-perform list with an injury, they still are deploying backup tight ends Ross Dwelley, Tyler Kroft and Tanner Hudson, a threesome that’s likely in much better shape to see action into the regular season over Fumagalli.

And those prior three can easily round out the roster for San Francisco’s final two preseason games, too, meaning Fumagalli got his chance against Green Bay to put some tape together in the hopes one of the other 31 teams out there is convinced enough to bite.
