49ers roster bubble after beating Packers: Tight end

Lock: George Kittle

Strong bubble: Charlie Woerner, Tanner Hudson, Tyler Kroft

Weak bubble: Ross Dwelley

Long shot: Troy Fumagalli

Like San Francisco’s starting linebackers, tight end George Kittle got the night off, which led to quite the open-ended competition at the position throughout Friday’s game.

The situation behind Kittle is awfully fluid, made even more cloudy by third-year pro Charlie Woerner starting off training camp on the PUP list, only to return after Week 1 of the preseason. While Woerner has never been much of a pass-catching force, the 49ers do appreciate his run-blocking skills.

Regardless, there might be room for the Niners to keep three of their four reserve tight ends behind Kittle, including Tanner Hudson, who ended up catching the game-winning touchdown off the hand of third-string quarterback Brock Purdy in the fourth quarter:

Hudson could feasibly have an edge on Kittle’s primary backup the last three years, Ross Dwelley, who had been relatively quiet during training camp.

Either way, Kyle Shanahan has kept four tight ends before, so the player to watch here might have to be Woerner and his health.
