49ers 53-man roster predictions ahead of first preseason game vs. Packers
49ers Running Backs (5)
RB Elijah Mitchell
RB Trey Sermon
RB Tyrion Davis-Price
RB Jeff Wilson, Jr
FB Kyle Juszczyk
PS: RB Jordan Mason, FB Josh Hokit
Another position without much in the way of intrigue is the running back room, where incumbent starter Elijah Mitchell looks to be stepping back into that role heading into the regular season, even if he won’t factor much, if at all, during the preseason.
There isn’t really much question about who will crack the roster behind, or in tandem with, Mitchell, with 2021 third-round pick Trey Sermon, 2022 third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price, and veteran Jeff Wilson looking pretty well set as the trio to fill out the room.
The wild card here is Jordan Mason, an undrafted rookie out of Georgia Tech, who is flashing signs of being an NFL player in training camp. Kyle Shanahan has a history of elevating undrafted running backs and making them an integral part of the offense, so if Mason shows out during the preseason, the Niners may not be able to protect him when roster cuts come along.
Mason may push Sermon and Wilson since Davis-Price is a different type of runner than anyone else on the 49ers roster and should be given the opportunity to step in as the primary short-yardage back for San Francisco.
Beyond that, fullback Kyle Juszczyk is making the roster, barring a major setback of some kind, and Josh Hokit, who spent last season on the 49ers’ practice squad, is set to stick around again unless someone else wants to claim him after the initial roster cuts.
