49ers training camp: What we learned with Week 2 in the books
What we learned from 49ers training camp: Tanner Hudson is a potential secret weapon
One thing Kyle Shanahan has longed for as a head coach but hasn’t been able to have is a second tight end to pair with George Kittle to add an extra dimension to the offense. The closest Shanahan has had to that was when Jordan Reed was on the team in 2020 to complement Kittle, but Reed was too injury-prone to be a long-term option. Ross Dwelley has been acceptable as a backup, but the team has been looking for something more.
Tanner Hudson has been turning heads with some highlight-reel catches in practice and could surprise this year as a secondary option in the offense.

Hudson hasn’t played much in the NFL with only five receptions for 67 yards so far in his career, so he’s a bit of an unknown in the league.
Look for Hudson to get plenty of time on the field during the preseason, though. If he performs, he very well could be positioned behind only Kittle on the depth chart when it comes to Week 1.
