49ers training camp faller No. 1: QB Brock Purdy

Not totally unlike Malik Turner, rookie quarterback Brock Purdy entered a situation where he was going to be a long shot to make the regular-season roster.

Although Purdy, the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, didn’t exactly have much of a choice where he signed.

All eyes have been on starting quarterback Trey Lance during training camp, understandably so. Yet the backup-QB battle is equally intriguing with Purdy looking to at least make a name for himself against the primary competitor for the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart, Nate Sudfeld.

Sudfeld carries a fully guaranteed $2 million contract for 2022, so he’s not going anywhere. But, like Turner, Purdy had to put himself in a situation where he effectively forces the Niners to use a roster spot on him.

While Sudfeld hasn’t exactly been dominant over two weeks of training camp, Purdy has likewise done little to suggest he’s worth keeping around.

Perhaps that was the expectation all along, and San Francisco might consider stashing the former Iowa State signal-caller on the practice squad for emergency call-up needs, should those arise.

However, based on what both he and Sudfeld have delivered in camp so far, one can only hope Lance stays fully healthy this season.

These 4 Niners draft picks from 2022 are already in danger of being cut. dark. Next
