49ers training camp faller No. 3: WR Malik Turner

In theory, Kyle Shanahan could keep six wide receivers on his 53-man roster. If he does, the chances for players like Malik Turner improve dramatically.

However, Shanahan may opt for reinforcements elsewhere, perhaps at tight end or at running back, which would leave the wide receiver room at a max cap of five players.

And it’s not hard to figure out the top five names without thinking too hard about it:

  1. Deebo Samuel
  2. Brandon Aiyuk
  3. Jauan Jennings
  4. Ray-Ray McCloud
  5. Danny Gray

Turner, a speedy veteran with special teams experience, hasn’t necessarily been bad in training camp. But he’s done little to suggest he’s a must-keep player. And with Gray, the rookie, managing to improve a noticeable bit between Weeks 1 and 2 of camp, the chances of Turner sticking around take a serious hit.

In fairness to Turner, he joined an already-crowded receiving room during the offseason and was a fringe player immediately after signing.

However, after watching players like Gray ascend over him on the depth chart, Turner’s chances of making an impact are diminishing.
