49ers training camp: 5 players impressing the most over first 2 weeks

49ers training camp standout No. 2: Cornerback Charvarius Ward
A year ago, San Francisco’s cornerback depth was a weakness. Entering 2022, it’s looking like it’ll be a strength.
While the 49ers made moves to address this during the offseason, none were bigger than the lucrative free-agent signing of former Kansas City Chiefs corner Charvarius Ward, who has been one of the Niners’ top training camp standouts over the first two weeks.
Sure, there have been instances where he’s been beaten for touchdowns and key grabs in practices, but nearly every occurrence has featured Ward in tight coverage, only the throw and catch were better than the defensive back’s efforts, which were still top-notch.
More often than not, however, Ward is making an impact and has emerged as San Francisco’s camp interception leader, prompting Fred Warner to comment about how the 49ers finally have “a pure lockdown corner:”

Along with Emmanuel Moseley, the Niners’ starting boundary cornerbacks are arguably as strong as they’ve been since head coach Kyle Shanahan took over duties in 2017, which has made the remaining portions of the depth stronger, too.
