49ers training camp standout No. 4: Defensive back Tarvarius Moore

There was a notable scenario where San Francisco’s third-round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft, defensive back Tarvarius Moore, wouldn’t make the regular-season roster this season. Especially in light of him having to recover and rebound from a torn Achilles last offseason that eliminated his 2021 campaign.

In light of the 49ers promoting second-year pro Talanoa Hufanga into a starting strong safety role and the offseason free-agent addition of George Odum, it was feasible Moore could be the odd man out.

He’s not allowing the Niners to make that case, though, particularly after a two-interception practice while showing no signs the torn Achilles is inhibiting him, prompting linebacker Fred Warner to be excited about what the defensive back might offer to the team this season:

Hufanga’s lack of straight-line speed might relegate him strictly to in-the-box duties, whereas Moore’s use as a big-nickel safety could be what San Francisco opts to do with him, taking advantage of his size and speed to serve as a back-end cover guy in tandem with free safety Jimmie Ward.

Based on the early results, that deployment could work out well.
