49ers training camp overreaction No. 5: Offensive line is going to be a problem
One of the reasons why Trey Lance was dealing with so many headaches throughout the first week of training camp is because the 49ers defensive line (and defense overall) is, well… pretty good.
However, the Niners didn’t exactly do Lance any favors by having to field a makeshift offensive line for much of the week either.
Already entering camp with questions about who’ll start at center in the wake of Alex Mack’s offseason retirement, and with open-ended questions about both guard spots, San Francisco started off without first-string tackles Trent Williams and Mike McGlinchey. And while the two have since returned to practice, they only saw time together on the final day, Saturday.
Instead, backups like Justin Skule, Jaylon Moore and Colton McKivitz were frequently having to line up opposite the 49ers’ elite first-string front-seven defense, and the results were pretty much what one would expect.
Niners D-line superior to Niners O-line.

Provided both Willams and McGlinchey stay healthy, San Francisco’s O-line should be in better shape during the regular season, but it’s still not a comfortable situation here.
Sure, it’s far too early to determine whether overreacting to the O-line’s struggles is a good idea, and the 49ers have been experimenting with different personnel.
But, of all the overreactions so far, this one might be the most on point.
Training camp resumes on Monday, Aug. 1.
