49ers training camp overreaction No. 3: Trey Lance is going to suck

You can comb through the various practice reports and breakdowns from the first four days of Niners training camp, and you’re likely to find both some promising and worrisome analyses of Trey Lance.

Let’s make it fairly simple.

On day one, Lance was good and went 9-of-11. On day two, Lance completed only 50 percent of his attempts and was picked off by safety Jimmie Ward. Day three was worse, the quarterback intercepted for what could have been a pick-six by safety Talanoa Hufanga, while also completing even less than 50 percent.

Then, on day four, Lance bounced back a bit by going 9-of-15 but was still intercepted by linebacker Fred Warner on the quarterback’s last throw.

Panic-button time? Is Lance going to flame out as many critics thought he would?

The actual answer, of course, is that it’s far too soon to say. Lance made throws in practice that his predecessor, Jimmy Garoppolo, would never attempt, and San Francisco was still utilizing a patchwork offensive line for the first four days of camp, too, and these linemen still aren’t allowed to engage in physical blocks until the pads come on.

Lance might be having slightly a rough go of things, but it’s way too soon to overreact.
