49ers training camp overreaction No. 2: Backup QBs Nate Sudfeld, Brock Purdy aren’t good

Understandably, the majority of attention during training camp has centered on quarterback Trey Lance. Why would it otherwise? After marinating on the bench for almost all of his rookie season, 2022 will be the former No. 3 overall draft pick’s time to shine.

Or flounder… more on that later.

However, the Niners have a bit of an intriguing battle for Lance’s primary backup heading into the regular season, one that’ll likely be determined by Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy.

So far, neither has exactly separated himself from the other, which was the same case during OTAs and minicamp. Purdy, the final pick from this year’s draft, has athleticism but not much arm strength, while Sudfeld has been a bit of a turnover machine during training camp thus far.

Sudfeld, the veteran, did go 11-of-11 on day one of camp, so perhaps that puts him in the lead over Purdy (aside from the former’s fully guaranteed $2 million contract). But it’s easy to question that after throwing three interceptions on the fourth day of practice.

So, should fans panic about San Francisco’s backup situation?

Perhaps. But, if we’re being honest, probably 80 percent of teams in the league are effectively screwed if they lose their starting quarterback for any serious length of time, so it’s not as if the 49ers are in a unique situation if Lance is lost.

Unless they bend to another possible overreaction.
