Not: 49ers offensive line

A year ago, training camp revealed some serious problems regarding the Niners’ offensive line depth. And despite San Francisco tossing additional resources at the position during the offseason, namely by drafting linemen Spencer Burford and Nick Zakelj, it doesn’t appear as if the depth is vastly improved.

Granted, as noted earlier, the 49ers were missing two starters in Trent Williams and Mike McGlinchey, who didn’t appear together on the field at the same time until Saturday’s practices. When they were together, the Niners O-line was notably better, but the depth remains a question mark.

So does the interior, as head coach Kyle Shanahan is still experimenting with his best option at center to replace now-retired Pro Bowler Alex Mack.

Reserve lineman Justin Skule, who missed all of 2021 with an ACL tear, is just one of the many presumed backups who have been regularly overworked by San Francisco’s pass-rushers and run stuffers, while fellow backups like Jaylon Moore and Colton McKivitz haven’t exactly done much to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

And we still have no clue who appears to be the best option at center. Jake Brendel? Daniel Brunskill? Keaton Sutherland? It’s unclear.
