49ers training camp: Who’s hot, who’s not after first week of practice
By Peter Panacy
Not: 49ers quarterback Trey Lance
You’re going to do it anyway, but just because Trey Lance is listed here with those who haven’t gotten out to the best start at training camp yet doesn’t automatically equate to panicking.
Lance was solid on the first day of training camp, going 9-of-11 and missing one incompletion when his receiving target slipped and fell.
However, the second-year quarterback tossed an interception and completed just 50 percent of his passes on day two of training camp before having an even more frustrating third day.
Lance was noticeably better on day four of camp after his offensive line received some much-needed reinforcements, but Week 1 left a bit to be desired.
There are a few notes to point out here, though.
For starters, Lance hasn’t received much time to throw at all and has been under relentless pressure, thanks largely to the Niners having to deploy a makeshift offensive line that was without starting tackles Trent Williams and Mike McGlinchey for much of the week. Plus, considering defenses typically look better than offenses early on in training camp, performances like these shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Still, Lance didn’t have the best opening week of training camp, but it’s nevertheless important for him to process what worked and what didn’t so those lessons can be applied towards the regular season.
