Predicting Deebo Samuel’s role, future with 49ers

There have been conflicting reports about whether or not San Francisco is close to signing what promises to be a lucrative extension for Deebo Samuel.

On one hand, some reports have suggested the two sides are still not close despite Samuel showing some good faith by showing up at mandatory minicamp. On the other, perhaps some rumor speaks to the wide back finally getting his well-deserved money:

If the 49ers actually wanted to entertain his earlier request and trade Samuel, they would have done so by now. Nothing outside of a blockbuster player-for-player swap would improve the Niners’ chances in 2022.

With that in mind, Samuel could face one of two plausible outcomes:

  1. Receive a contract extension potentially up to $30 million per year
  2. Not receive a new deal and play 2022 on the final year of his rookie contract

If Samuel were to hold out during training camp, he’d incur $40,000 in fines per day absent, which would add up quickly. Should he not participate in games, even preseason ones, he’d be docked a full week’s pay.

Holding out doesn’t seem to be a legitimate option, but this isn’t a case where San Francisco wants to have a disgruntled star on its hands, even if the team can reserve the franchise-tag option for 2023 and 2024.

No, the likely outcome is for the 49ers to handsomely reward Samuel and keep him around for the long run.

Then, amid all the attention he’ll receive after already receiving a ton already, it’ll be up to Samuel to justify that new deal.
