49ers thin-ice player No. 2: Running back JaMycal Hasty

The Niners didn’t necessarily need to reinforce their running back room during the offseason, but they did anyway, using a third-round pick on LSU tailback Tyrion Davis-Price.

In tandem with this year’s presumed No. 1 rusher, Elijah Mitchell, Davis-Price figures to be part of a one-two punch that’ll hopefully reinvigorate what turned into a stagnant ground attack late last year that was only alleviated by the “wide back” usage of wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

While Davis-Price’s drafting doesn’t bode well for second-year running back Trey Sermon, at least in terms of carries, it seems a bit premature to think Sermon is in danger of being waived right away.

However, with fellow rushers Jeff Wilson Jr. and rookie Jordan Mason also in the mix, signs aren’t looking good for third-year pro running back JaMycal Hasty.

Hasty has had some flashes of brilliance here and there, particularly a 57-yard rushing game against the New England Patriots his rookie season. However, with three fumbles on 39 total touches at the NFL level, it’s probably a safe bet to suggest Kyle Shanahan won’t be at all patient with the former undrafted free agent.

Instead of being a likable situational weapon, Hasty is a fringe player heading into 2022 and will face considerably stiff competition unless he absolutely wows during training camp.
