49ers training camp question No. 1: Which rookies rise to the occasion?

While there are always plenty of concerns entering any given training camp, there are fun storylines to watch, too.

And few things are as exciting to watch as rookies.

The 49ers don’t have the high-profile first-round pick this year, thanks to 2021’s Trey Lance trade-up, yet fans should eagerly be watching whether or not Round 2 EDGE Drake Jackson out of USC can turn into the prolific pass-rusher the team can hopefully pair with Pro Bowl edge rusher Nick Bosa.

If so, the Niners will have one of the more formidable one-two pass-rushing tandems in the league.

There’ll be other storylines, too, such as seeing whether or not fifth-round cornerback Samuel Womack can lock down a starting nickel back job, if Round 3 rookie wide receiver Danny Gray can use his speed to take the top off the defense, if fellow third-rounder Tyrion Davis-Price can provide some heavy thump at running back or if some of those late-round and undrafted rookies wind up turning heads, too.

Every year since 2017, San Francisco has had at least one rookie stand out in a major way during camp, and it’ll be intriguing to see who the player(s) winds up being in 2022.
