No. 1: 49ers rename Levi’s Stadium “Dwight Clark Memorial Stadium”

Bill Walsh is the greatest head coach in 49ers history. No one questions that. And there are plenty of players over the years who’d qualify for being the best Niners player of all time, too, particularly if we’re centering down on Hall of Famers like Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.

However, naming Levi’s Stadium after one of those two would probably be too easy.

Instead, there’d be few better ways to both link San Francisco’s dynasty years to its current era and the future than to hone in on the greatest single play in 49ers history.

Wide receiver Dwight Clark’s famed “The Catch” against the Dallas Cowboys in the 1982 NFC Championship game.

The late great not only helped propel the Niners into dynasty status with that catch, but Clark’s play goes down as one of the most memorable in all of sports.

We thought about naming Levi’s Stadium something like “The Catch Field,” but that doesn’t quite work. Instead, and in light of all the things the franchise continues to do in support of Clark and the Golden Heart Fund, simply renaming the venue at 4900 Marie P DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara after Clark himself would be quite the tribute.
