No. 3: 49ers defensive back Tarvarius Moore

Justin Skule isn’t the only backup who could potentially assume a prominent role after coming off a serious injury.

During the same offseason, defensive back Tarvarius Moore suffered a torn Achilles that canceled out his 2021 regular-season campaign, which had the effect of delaying what would have been a contract year that season into 2022.

Now, the former 2018 third-round pick is fighting for what could either be a starting job, at best, or to merely stay on the roster in one way or another.

The 49ers bid farewell to long-time starting strong safety Jaquiski Tartt during the offseason. And while they appear poised to start second-year pro Talanoa Hufanga in Tartt’s stead, Moore also has to be viewed as a potential option.

If not that role, Moore could also revert back to being a big-nickel third safety on the field or possibly even a reserve boundary cornerback, which he’s done before, too.

Moore’s 2022 campaign could end up defining the rest of his career, as he’ll be scheduled for free agency once the year is up.
